Why a laboratory-created diamond?

They are a quality alternative.

How Fenix Laboratory-Created Diamonds Are Made

  • Fenix Laboratory‐Created Diamonds for Michael Hill are grown in state‐of‐the‐art laboratories which emulate the Earth's forces and conditions necessary for a diamond to grow.
  • The carbon-atom in a diamond-seed is activated, stimulating the diamond to grow.
  • The result is a laboratory-created diamond, which replicates the chemical composition, crystal structure and physical (including optical) properties of a natural diamond.

Laboratory-Created Diamonds FAQ

  • Are laboratory-created diamonds real?

As technology has advanced, it is no longer necessary for a gem to be "naturally" formed to be classified as a diamond. Laboratory-created and naturally mined diamonds are different types of diamonds, with laboratory-created diamonds having essentially the same chemical composition, physical (including optical) properties and crystal structure of natural (or mined) diamonds. However laboratory-created diamonds are created in state-of-the-art facilities, and natural diamonds are created by forces of nature.
  • How are laboratory-created diamonds graded?

Laboratory-created diamonds are graded by the Four Cs (cut, colour, clarity, and carat), like natural diamonds are. Laboratory-created diamonds offer a Fifth C – choice. If you choose to purchase a Fenix laboratory-created Diamond for Michael Hill, your diamond is certified, just as our natural diamonds are.
  • Can you tell the difference between a laboratory-created diamond and a mined stone?

Fenix laboratory-created diamonds are a quality alternative, which have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and physical (including optical) properties as a mined diamond. At Michael Hill, we will always clearly inform our customers of the type of diamond they are purchasing.
  • What types of laboratory-created diamonds does Michael Hill sell?

Our initial offering is a collection of solitaire rings. These rings are available for custom order only and take 7 – 10 business days for your order to be completed.
